A new type of dementia has been identified; experts say this could be one of the most important dementia findings in years.
According to researchers, millions of people have a form of dementia that has been misdiagnosed as Alzheimer’s disease.
The newly identified condition, limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy (LATE) shares similar symptoms to Alzheimer’s, but it is a distinct disease.
Predominantly, research has been conducted on Alzheimer’s; however, researchers say up to a third of those who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s may instead have LATE.
According to the work that looked at the evidence from thousands of post-mortem results, one in five who are 80 and over, are affected by LATE.
Whilst we all hope that science will eventually cure dementia, that prospect is by consensus possibly decades away.
At Steene Law Ltd we deal with people who have to deal with the realities of dementia now, today, tonight and tomorrow.
In addition to the physical and emotional toil, the financial unfairness is so often ignored.
At Steene Law Ltd, every day we hear and empathise with the same sentiment “mum and dad paid their taxes all their lives, and now they have dementia. They are going to lose all their savings, sell our family home, it is just so unfair”.
At Steene Law Ltd we are delighted that legacies in Wills contribute towards research but this research does not bring the relief our clients seek.
One option we always suggest is considering non-means tested Continuing Health Care.
NHS funding is available to anyone who can establish what is known as a primary health need.
We fear that the new type of dementia identified is going to be treated just like any other form of dementia. The person who has it merely needs social care, which is means tested via a Financial Assessment as opposed to having a medical condition worthy of a mention in the National Press.
